Honest Eggs with Local Roots - A Circular Partnership with Wandering Feathers

Romilla Arber

At Honesty our mission is simple, food with integrity. This means looking beyond perceptions to truly understand where it came from, the people, and the methods that sustain it. We’re proud to be working with Wandering Feathers a small scale egg producer based at Kingsclere Estate where circular farming isn’t a buzzword it’s a way of life.

This collaboration isn’t just about sourcing eggs. It’s about supporting local farms that feed into a wider ecosystem of soil, water, animals and people they are linked and they are essential.

Hens That Heal the Land

The hens at Wandering Feathers don’t just lay eggs they contribute to a living system. Housed in mobile coops, they roam fresh pasture every day. They help to aerate the soil, distribute cow manure, and even break parasite cycles by foraging for insects and larvae. It’s a natural form of pest control, no chemicals needed just hens doing what hens do best. By rotating their grazing spots, the land is never exhausted. Instead, it’s enriched with better soil structure, enhanced water filtration, and increased biodiversity. These small birds have a big impact.

It’s a Circular System

Much of the grain in the hens diet oats, beans, soya and wheat is grown on the very same land they forage. Supplemented with oils and whatever herbs, seeds, or insects they find in the field, their diet is not only organic its local. There’s surprising value in roam culture, the hens consume small amounts of pasture fed cow dung as they peck through the same fields eliminating parasites that might otherwise harm the cattle. It’s a brilliant example of circular agriculture everyone’s playing their part.

Pasture Raised, With Meaning

“Pasture fed” might sound glib but at Wandering Feathers it’s about access to a naturally varied diet and a wonderful happy life outdoors. Hens are naturally curious and their environment affects everything from welfare to the nutritional quality of their eggs. As Rodrigo put it:

“They’re never bored. There’s so much to explore, every day they’re eager to go out and see new things.”

A lifestyle free from chemical treatments and packed with natural foraging results in vibrant yolks, rich flavour, and real nutritional depth. No artificial additives needed. Just good old farming practices.

From Chef to Farmer

Wandering Feathers is run by former chef Rodrigo Navarro and his wife, Kirsten - a former primary school teacher, his journey began during the COVID lockdowns, when ingredient shortages exposed how fragile our food system really is.

“I couldn’t understand why I couldn’t get hold of basic ingredients. That threw me down a rabbit hole of researching agriculture… and now I’m here, a farmer.”

It’s a story we hear all too often; one of disconnection turned into reconnection. Of people leaving a life in search of something tangible, something rooted. And in doing so, helping to rebuild our broken food system literally from the ground up.

A Natural Fit with Honesty

Wandering Feathers' values align closely with ours. We believe in buying from local producers, not just for the freshness of the product, but to support the resilience of our region’s food network. When you buy from Honesty, you’re buying from real people, real farms, and a supply chain that prioritises soil health, animal welfare, and community livelihoods.

“Honesty’s in a great position to help small producers like me reach customers who care. That kind of support is vital.”

These eggs aren’t just better for the land they’re better for you; we think that’s something worth cracking open.
